What Is Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal is a dental procedure that treats an infection or swelling in the pulp (the soft tissue) of a tooth. As it is filled with nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue, the pulp when infected or damaged can be very painful. During a root canal, the dentist removes the pulp that is infected or has died, cleans and seals the insides of your tooth to protect it from further infection. This method allows you to maintain your original tooth rather than having it pulled.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may need a root canal:

  • Severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or touching the tooth
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers even after the stimulus is removed
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the affected tooth
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gums (an abscess)

The Root Canal Procedure

At Roha Dental, we strive to make your root canal treatment as comfortable as possible. Here’s what to expect:

Consultation & X-rays: First of all, we will be taking an X-ray to look closely at the infected tooth as well as its surrounding area. This helps ensure that we have a clear and definite target for our therapy, as well as letting you know how bad things have got.

Numbing the Area: We will inject you with local anaesthetic so that your tooth and how it feels during therapy will be numb.

Cleaning the Tooth: The dentist takes out the pulp from inside of your tooth, which has become infected or damaged. The inner canals are cleaned and disinfected thoroughly, in order to keep out any future infection.

Filling the Tooth: Once the tooth is properly cleaned, a special material is used to fill the empty canals. This seals them and keeps out future infection.

Sealing the Tooth: When the root canal is completed, we will put a temporary filling. In most cases a crown or permanent filling will be installed to restore the tooth’s shape and function.
